The Cookeville City Council is considering the purchase of a new Christmas tree for the Christmas in the Park celebration at Dogwood Park.

The Cookeville City Council is considering the purchase of a new Christmas tree for the Christmas in the Park celebration at Dogwood Park.

The Cookeville City Council this week is considering whether to purchase a new Christmas tree to display at Dogwood Park.

A bid of $40,600 from Winterland, Inc. is the lowest of three bids for the 30-foot tower tree, which is similar to the one the city has now.

The other two bids were $53,025 from LEDgen Lighting and $61,604 from Christmas Décor Systems.

"The top section of the (current) tree, like the kind you would put in your home, it was broken," Cookeville Leisure Services Director Rick Woods said. "We were wiring it together."

Woods said that section of the tree would no longer hold the tree topper.

The city council agreed in 2015 to purchase the original tree that plays music set to a light display used for the city's Christmas in the Park. Since then, the city staff have annually transformed the Dogwood Park fountain to accommodate the tree.

"We're going to keep the old tree," Woods said. "Some of the things we can use if need be. Some (parts) will be interchangeable. We couldn't purchase parts for the old tree, but we can use the old tree as our parts supply if we run into any issues."

Woods said the new tree will have additional songs, and the low bid for the new tree is less than what was budgeted.

"Needless to say, it's an expected attraction now," Cookeville City Manager James Mills said. "We appreciate your support."

Prior to the annual ceremony at Dogwood Park, a tree lighting ceremony was held outside of Cookeville Performing Arts Center.

Previous council member Larry Epps and former Mayor Ricky Shelton were among proponents of the musical tree and the Christmas in the park celebration.

Also on this week's council agenda:

• Presentation of officer of the year, life saving medal and distinguished citizen awards from the Cookeville Police Department.

• Bids for 200 underground fault indicators, two 75 KVA transformers and 20,000 feet of 1/0 URD Primary Cable for the electric department.

• Pricing adjustments for three transformer bids previously approved by the city council.

• Bids for semi-annual materials and tire recapping services for the public works department and bids for inventory items for the water quality control department.

• Purchase of dumpsters for the public works department.

• Contract with the state to accept the Tennessee Law Enforcement Hiring, Training and Recruitment Program Grant for the police department.

• Bids for a wire tensioner, trailer and underground cable puller for the electric department.

• Engineering contract for the design of sanitary sewer for the South Creek Subdivision, about 90 lots in the Bunker Hill Road/Lovelady Road area.

• Contract for environmental and geotechnical due diligence for the Lemon Farris Industrial Park Site through the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development Site Development Grant.

The council meets at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Cookeville City Hall at 45 E. Broad St.
